Skin Care - L'Oreal RevitaLift Bright Reveal

So I recently signed up for Influenster Canada and received a VoxBox from L'Oreal to test. Within the box, was their new JLo spokesperson Bright Reveal line. As I am becoming older I realize how important skin care is and I take great pleasure with a skin care routine, as it allows me to wind down before bed and relax. I have used it for a couple of days and truly, you cannot review a skin care line until you have used it for at least a month. Instead, I am going to discuss my first impression and then follow it up with a full review after using it for a while.

Brightening Scrub Cleanser - is a daily scrub cleanser containing Glycolic acid and Perlite. First, what is Perlite? Google to the rescue. According to www.perlite.org, it is "a naturally occurring siliceous volcanic rock". Therefore, I am assuming the "grit" is this.  Secondly, the glycolic acid does not have an indicated percentage.
I am not a proponent of daily scrubs. I say this because too much physical exfoliation can lead to micro tears and inflammation of the skin, thus more break outs. Additionally, I prefer chemical which this line already has with its glycolic pads. The cleanser is perfumed with a clean, fresh scent and also contains sodium laureth sulfate. Both of which are irritants to the skin, with the latter potentially drying out the skin.
My thoughts so far are mediocre due to the scent, the recommended daily exfoliation and the ingredients.

Brightening Peel Pads- claims to resurface uneven skin. Immediately brightens. Reduces wrinkles* (in terms of looks).  It contains 10% Glycolic Complex, a combination of citric acid, glycolic acid and HEPES (-hydroxyethyl)-piperazineethanesulfonic acid). For me, I would like to know the percentage of  each acid within the complex.
My first impression is a good one, but I am a little biased as I enjoy a chemical exfoliation. These are gentle and do not make my skin sting. These are great for glycolic virgins.

Brigtening Daily Lotion with SPF 30-  this contains Glycolic acid, Vitamin Cg (Ascobyl Glucoside) and Pro-Rentinol (Retinyl Palmitate). I love the idea of Vitamin C with my moisturiser; however, I am not a fan of using retinols nor glycolic acid during the day. For me, using retinol  and glycolic acid during the night where cell turnover is at is most efficacious, is best. Again, the packaging does indicated the amount of glycolic acid, which is irksome. However, I am glad it contains a broad spectrum sunscreen Octocrylene 7%, Homosalate 5% Octisalate 5% and Avobenzone 3%. All of which are chemical sunscreens. In addition, one the ingredients closest to the beginning is dimethicone, which is a silicone and will give the skin a soft, velvet feel.
I can appreciate a broad spectrum especially if it contains pro-retinol and glycolic acid. It would be irresponsible of them not to. However, I do not like silicone in my moisturiser as it leads to a false sense of smoothness and silicone can block pores. It absorbs nicely into the skin without the white cast that many sunscreens give. The scent is very light and clean.

Brightening Dual Overnight Moisturiser -  this contains 4% glycolic acid and pro-retinol, which is where it should be. It has a dual chamber, one is transparent, while the other is semi-opaque with a pearlescent quality. Once pumped, the texture is silky and slightly thin.
Looking at the ingredient list, you find glycolic acid near the beginning, which is fantastic but the pro-retinol near the bottom. Furthermore, dimethicone is also near the beginning.
Even though it has silicone in it, I am enjoying it thus far. While at first it feels slightly tacky, this fluid texture eventually absorbs well into the skin, leaving it smooth and feeling hydrated. Anytime, you moisturise  your skin at night, your skin will thank you.

These are just a few of my thoughts and observations

Bite Beauty- The Multistick

You know those days when you just want a little colour or can't be bothered to do a full face. I love easy, fuss-free beauty. Let me further explain. I love makeup that can be used multiple ways. And no, I don't mean when you are in a pinch, using your lipstick as a blush. There have been many products that has been marketed as such, but Bite's, The Multistick, is something a touch different.

First, the colours flatter lips, cheeks and eyes. All too often, companies will imply that they can be used as such, but in reality, it looks horrible on the eyes. Bite's Multistick colour line up contains mostly nudes;  nude rose, nude brown, nude pinky peach, you get the idea. Secondly, the texture of the bullet is soft but dry. Using it on the lips creates a matte dry feeling, and not greasy for cheeks and eyes. Third, it blends  easily and almost "sets". However, the formula does not last, at least, not on me. I have normal to oily skin and it stays for about 3 hours at most. The colours are so flattering and soft, that it is forgivable and easily reapplied.

With more research regarding harmful ingredients, I love Bite's philosophy, i.e., food grade makeup. I also love that a Canadian company is innovative and creative with their ingredients textures, packaging, and colours. I am talking about you Kale and Squid Ink. It is reassuring to know that what you put on your face and ultimately, into your body is not harmful.

I purchased Gelato at my local Sephora prior to the display, therefore I wasn't able to try the textures nor colours. Gelato is a nude mauve rose. Perfect for lips, cheeks and eyes.  It felt a little dry on the lips but not like liquid lipstick dry. $28 Canadian gives you 0.17oz/4.75g.  Furthermore, the product has a shelf life of 24 months. Additionally, I bought two more colours, papaya and cerise. Both goregous with papaya a bright coral pink and cerise a deep neutral red/rose.

Specs:
4.75g for $28 Cdn
Organic Food Grade product
18 colours

Review: MAC Pro Beyond Twisted Mascara

When I find something that works for me, I generally do not waiver, especially when it comes to mascara. My love for M.A.C's Opulash and Extended Play Gigablack, is well documented. So, when I ventured to the M.A.C. store and saw they had a new mascara displayed, I was tentative to try it. However, me being me, had to see what made this one special.

Wand -check, brush- check. However, on further inspection, M.A.C decided to be innovative and make the neck of the wand flexible. Yes, it bends up to 90 degree. It is comprised of a flexible metal-like neck with a fairly long brush head with very short bristles. The bristles are not plastic and remind me of Maybelline's Lash discovery.  Never really thought I needed a malleable mascara wand, but obviously it is an issue we face with mascara application. Who knew?!

So, I took it home, and gave my little genius friend a try. Here are my thoughts:

The formula is wet and very black. However, I have to scrape the majority off the bristles. Have I mentioned I am not a fan of the clumpy lash look? Not scraping this, will give you that if  you desire it. Pour moi, no thanks. It definitely defines the lashes and lengthens them a bit. According to M.A.C it is also suppose to lift and curl the lashes. Nope, cannot agree with that and in fact, it doesn't hold the curl I have. However, because of the spiffy new wand, I am able to apply product to the base of my lashes.

Price: $27 Cdn.

ColourPop - Taking Over

If you are into makeup as much as I am, you have heard of ColourPop. A cosmetics company that is building its reputation on affordable ($5.00 USD) and high end-feeling products. Additionally, it is savvy utilizing YouTube through collaborations with popular YouTube beauty personalities. Furthermore, the names are tongue in cheek (Get Lucky, Bull Chic,) the finishes and colours are bold and appeal to those with disposal income. Just to quickly add, the lippie stix have either matching or colour coordinating lip pencils. So if you have a black lipstick and are using your black eyeliner, you now can have a proper lip pencil.

Products:
Lippie Stix $5.00 usd (0.0357oz /1g) comparison: MAC lipsticks are 3g
  • Matte
  • glossy
  • satin
  • hyperglossy
  • pearlized
Super Shock Eyeshadow + Pigments $5.00 usd (0.07oz)

  • Metallic
  • Matte
  • Satin
  • Ultra Metallic
  • Pearlized
  • Tie Dyed
  • Pressed Pigment
Super Shock Cheek Blush $8.00 usd
  • Matte
  • Satin
I watch a lot of YouTube videos and unfortunately, as hard as I try, I do fall victim to hype and these are sooooooooo hyped online. Tentative, I purchased 5 items, two Lippie Stix - Cookie and Pitch and three Super Shock Eyeshadows - On the Rocks, La La, and 3.

The packaging is clean and white with holographic labeling with the lippie stix coming in a twist up stick and the shadows coming in a screw top pot. They also include a cute handwritten inspirational note, awwwww. Who cares, right? Let's move on to the product, which is what you want to know about. The eyeshadows are an interesting texture - kind of like Chanel's Illusion d'Ombre - in that it is a cream to powder formulation but then there is a bounce to ColourPop's shadows. They are best used with your fingers but can be easily blended with brushes.

Cookie - is a matte nude beige with peach undertones.
Application: smooth, easy and creamy.

Pitch - is a matte chocolate with warm undertones.
Application: smooth and creamy

On the Rocks -A warm bronze with pink and gold glitters. Metallic in finish with very little fall out.

La La - Metallic coppery brown with hints of pink. It's described as a "true rose gold". The pay off is intense with no creasing.

3 - A metallic cool bronze with silver glitter. Some fallout but no creasing.

Overall, the shadows, that I have tried, are fantastic. They blend well, do not crease and are intensely pigmented. The lipsticks are creamy and do not dry out the lips. Although, they say they are matte, there is some shine to them. I was so impressed I put in another order! They only issue is the shipping, the exchange rate and how they are mailed. Let me explain the latter, these little babies are fragile so packaging them in an envelope instead of a box as our neighbours to the south would receive them is perhaps taking a risk with the product, just sayin'.

Check out this company for awesome nudes, pinks, purples, dark, blacks, greens - you name it.

Cheers,
xo Megs

P.S. I purchased more eyeshadows in Get Lucky, Fringe, Girly, So Quiche, Hammered and Smash. Also, more lipsticks in Bullchic, Skimpy, Creature, and Wet.

IMATS - Toronto 2014

You know when you have been looking forward to something so much that your expectations are incredibly high? Well, I think that is what occurred when I attended my inaugural International Makeup Artists Trade Show (IMATS).

I woke up bright and early Saturday morning, put on my face and boarded the subway at 07:45.  I had my list products, which is a must as it will cut your time in lines.  First stop - Makeup Up For Ever, which appeared to be everyone's initial purchase, too. Thank goodness I had my list; however, the variety of product was disappointing . For instance, the gorgeous Artist Shadows only had maybe 1/3 of the colours from the range and none of the colours I wanted - Oh well. At least, I purchased my HD Foundation in N117, Cream Blush in 310, and two Aqua Lip Liners 01C and 22C. In total, the experience at MUFE took about 1 hour.

Make Up For Ever

Then I moved on to some other vendors. Honestly, I thought the space would be bigger with more vendors present. Morphe had huge lines as did Nigel's Beauty Emporium and MAC. From what I have been told and watched on YouTube Nigel's has had crazy sales on lashes but I wasn't even able to see what they had to offer. I did purchase some Beauty So Clean for my makeup and saw the amazingly beautiful Pixiwoo Sisters - Nick and Sam. Shit they are tall and gorgeous.

Overall, I am happy I went to  IMATS and pleased with my purchases. If you want to see some great talent and are patient, then I completely recommend it.

Cheers,
Megs

Makeup, Makeup, Makeup

Hi my lovelies, I know I have been absent for a little bit. Work has been busy and I decided to take a little vacation from work and makeup, which also included buying (I know, shocking).  Sometimes one needs to take time away and reassess. For me, I literally took inventory of my "collection". Additionally, I have fallen in love with something other than makeup <3

However, with the aforementioned said, Holiday Collections will soon arrive and I am looking forward to M.A.C's Heirloom Mix. With pearls and Cameos as a part of its campaign stills - it conjures rich, luxurious and ornate textures and colours.  The packaging appears to be black with a glitter inlay with cameos adorning the palettes.

available Oct 23 online in North America

Urban Decay's annual Vice palette offers a decadent mix of mattes and shimmers. We have become accustomed to UD's quality shadows and I hope this remains true.

Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book $66 Cdn,  includes a mix of vivids and neutrals. This little palette might be a nice introduction to Kat Von D. Her shadows are generally silky that includes textures of matte, shimmer, iridescent and satins. .

Mascaras

For those of us not blessed with long, lush lashes, mascara is that lovely little product that creates the curtains to our windows. Whether it be Bambi or Spider, to have longer and thicker lashes has always been coveted.Thank God for Eugene Rimmel and Helena Rubinstein.

History indicates that like most makeup,it was the Egyptians who started to use products on the eyes and face. They used concoctions of malachite, crocodile stool, galena, charcoal, honey and water. While aesthetically appealing, the dark lashes were to protect the soul and ward off evil spirits.

My favourites:

M.A.C. Opulash Optimum Black - Teddy Bear brush for volume and a kaolin clay formula that is great for girls with oilier lids. It is a drier formula, think Dior Show without the crazy price.  I can wear this for over 12 hours without smudges, flakes or clumps. The problem with this and other volumizing formulas, is that it will dry out before 3 months.

Maybelline Lash Discovery - such a small brush for those tiny lashes, it gives more of a natural look.Unfortunately, I can't find the little bugger, so I think it is discontinued. Similar would be M.A.C. Extended Play Gigablack.

Cover Girl Clump Crusher - love this little one, as it has a curved brush and literally no clumps. The brush is plastic, which I generally do not like. However, this works really well for giving definition, and separation, while being clump free.

Tips:
- When taking mascara out of the tube, twist it out. Pumping it pumps oxygen into the tube and increases bacteria.
- Remove excess product either on the lip of the tube or wipe it on a tissue.
- Generally after 3 months, formulations will start to be ineffective and flake

Tell  me about your favourite mascaras

Trend - Liquid Lipsticks

If you are into makeup as yours truly, you would have noticed the trend in liquid lipsticks. They have been around in guises of stains, opaque glosses, long lasting and laquers. However, the newest round have produced opaque, matte and non-drying formulations. As someone who works over 12 hour days and cannot be bothered to touch up their makeup, the new formulations are perfect!

In previous blog posts, I mention Pretty Zombie Cosmetics and Kat Von D. Thus far, these guys are at the top of the matte liquid lipstick trend.

Lime Crime's Velvetines are suppose to be very similar to the aforementioned, but I have yet to try. However, I would love to get my hands on their matte chocolate colour in Salem, very witchy.

Among other companies creating matte liquid lipsticks are Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics (no doe foot applicator), Stila, Essence (3 colours), NYX,  Hourglass (remains sticky), Sephora, MUA, Chi Chi, Australis and Too Faced

Pros: Long lasting, ease of application, smudge resistant, bold colours,

Caveats: Eating something with oil, these puppies will transfer and disappear. Additionally, they wear in the middle of the lip first. With the exception of OCC, the lack of colours from each collection is unfortunate.

Cheers lovelies,
Megs

M.A.C. Alluring Aquatic

M.A.C., you little sea nymph. How dare you lure me with your siren song of metallic turquoise packaging.....damn you!! Ahhhh I digress. Packaging aside, this year's summer collection is just swimming (like that eh ;) )  Check out my latest video about it.

cheers Megs xo

Lime Crime

Lime Crime
Unicorns do exist.....thanks to Lime Crime. I couldn't help smile when I first saw this packaging. I pictured myself skipping with fairies and glitter, lots of glitter. Whilst some may find it juvenile and tacky, I think it's cute and unique. To me, the line is whimsical and creative. Mind you I still love my black and chrome.

Recently, I purchased seven shades of Lime Crime's Opaque Lipstick:
  • Airborne Unicorn- mid tone bright purple. Good amount of pigmentation and very comfortable on the lips.
  • Glamour 101 - brick deep red. Glamour 101 glides lovely on the lips  and is slightly sheerer then the others. Extremely wearable red and formulation. One of my favourites.
  • Chinchilla - creamy grey with lavender tone. Chinchilla is my favourite as it is creamy, opaque and a unique colour.
  • Styletto - black.  Satin formulation that needs more than one coat on the lips. Extremely comfortable to wear.
  • Cosmo Pop - soft, creamy, milky orange. Cosmo Pop is more chalking and opaque, one just has to be careful not to go over the lips many times or patches may peek through.
  • Coquette - peachy nude. Creamy and opaque. This is a great nude for most people.
  • Poisonberry - deep bright purple blue undertones. It goes on smoothly and slightly sheer. Poisonberry stains the lips. Personally, I do not have a problem with that as it makes it last longer.

L-R Chinchilla, Styletto, Coquette, Poisonberry, Glamour 101, Cosmo POP, Airborne Unicorn

Most are creamy and opaque, with a satin finish without being dry. Additionally, these lovelies have a vanilla fragrance.

If you are looking for vegan lipstck and not tested on animals, then look no further than Lime Crime. In Canada, one can order them online from Limecrime.com 18.99 + shipping or nailpolishcanada.com $19.99 cdn

Spring/Summer 2014 Makeup Trends

Adjectives for 2014 Spring Summer makeup trends were easy to conjure: Macarons (sweet), Sexy, Simplistic, and Girlie.  Spring is fresh, clean and tranquil, and the makeup reflects this idea. I am looking forward to trying each of these looks.

Bright Matte Lips- especially in orange, pastel bubblegum pink, bright lavender
Bronzed skin - bronzed skin that is one or two levels deeper than one's skin tone- think Les Beiges by Chanel.
Black liner- winged, inner rims it all works this summer
Washes of colour - aqua, pink, lavender, chartreuse and white.

Blue Cut Crease

The Cut Crease is a dramatic look that is generally accompanied by an equally dramatic winged eye. It requires blending, blending and patience.

Step 1: Draw a thin line above your natural crease. Pick a colour you desire, for this look I used Plumage - a dark teal. This line can be drawn with a eye pencil, cream liner or shadow.

Step 2: Smudge the top of the line upwards, to show a gradient effect and there needs to be a line of crisp demarcation. Also, blend outwards for a thick wing
Continue to add and blend to this line

Step 3: Underneath the brow bone, add a transition colour. I used a warm brown.

Step 4: Add a lid colour and use it to "cut" or make the crease sharp

Step 5: Drawn your wing liner- here I used an Eyeliner in Cyan.

Step 6: Place your brow highlight.

Step 7: Smudge under the bottom lashes and join it with the top lash corner.

Step 8: Use concealer to make the look crisper

Toronto Makeup Finds

Since moving to Toronto, I have access to beauty products like never before. I haven't done as much damage as I thought - much restraint. With that said, "With much power (knowledge) comes much responsibility", so I feel it is my duty to share with you the vast number of fabulous makeup finds.

PIR- Praise Jesus Google Maps exists, or else I would not have found this little gem of a boutique. Tucked within Yorkville on a side street, contains a full hair salon and makeup store. Within it, contains niche products such as  Kevyn Aucoin, Eve Lom, Paula Dorf and Mario Badescu.
http://www.pircosmetics.com/

R. Hiscott- Purveyor of theatrical makeup and wigs. Whilst its former digs was cluttered and cramped, the location on the Danforth is small but better laid out. They still provide incredible experience and knowledge with companies such as Mehron and Ben Nye. If you need Pros Aid or 1st degree, you can find it here.

Blur Makeup Room- Meeting the creator of Yaby cosmetics and the staff at this great little find, was a fantastic experience. I was able to purchase the ever elusive Embryolisse Creme Concentre as well as other lovely little products otherwise scarce; Yaby cosmetics, OCC, Graftobian, Bdellium tools, Lit Cosmetics, Stilazzi, Face Atelier and Kim Green line of bags.
Blur Makeup Room

Pacific Mall - It brought me back to my days in Korea. Love the stalls containing many health and beauty stores. Here is where I found true BB creams like my beloved Lioelle Waterdrop.

M.A.C. Pro Store- Before moving here, I visited this store whenever I was in Toronto. Love it and will always find a place in my heart for this one on Bloor Street West

Jealousy - Cute store on Queen Street West, where there are tons of Asian Beauty products but also Me, Me, Me line of cosmetics

Kryolan Makeup Store - Kryolan store with an Acadamey within the building. Knowledgeable staff and tons of products. Finally, found Z-palettes in Toronto!

Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutiques - the mega store is located in the Eaton Centre. It definitely received a make over. It is sleek and sexy, with lacquered black and stations intricately placed winding throughout the store. This has Darphin, Chanel, L'Occitane, Philosophy as well as the usual Biotherm, Clarins, Smashbox etc.

Kohl Rimmed Eyes

We all know that the eyes are the windows to the soul and with a little Kohl those windows bring the heat. A little bit rock n' roll, sexy and smokey, the kohl rimmed eye dates back to the ancient Egyptians where it was used to protect the eyes from the sun and ward of the Evil Eye. Other parts of the world used it as a cosmetic. For instance in India, kohl brought attention to the eyes and dancers' movements. Whether you call it kohl or kajal, the look creates a sensual look and both sexes have been using it for years. Look at johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow or the past punk and rock n' roll gods - it draws you in, creates mystery and wantonness.

Skip to now and the sexiness of it isn't going anywhere. Just hit a club or a couple out on a date, the eyes will be smoked out with the blackness of kohl or a variation of it. The way kohl was made was a little suspect, now modern formulas are safe and beautiful. It comes in variations such as the traditional powder and the ease of a pencil. Such companies as Guerlain make an ornate packaged powdered version that intimidates me. For me, the pencil version is the easiest and gives me the desired look. Rimmel makes a fabulous version, as do MAC and Lancome. Be forewarned kohls are soft and will smudge, but that is what makes it sexy ;)

Recommended:

Guerlain Terracotta Kohl
Rimmel Kohl Kajal -Black
M.A.C Kohl - Feline and Smoulder
Lancome Le Crayon Khol - Black Ebony, Black Lapis

Review: YSL Le Teint Touche Eclat

With the huge success of Touche Eclat concealer/highlighter, YSL has launched the new foundation Le Teint Touche Eclat.  As I am a foundation trollop, I had to get my hands on this one.

YSL describes this foundation as illuminating, dimensional radiance, weightless perfection. It is suppose to target the shadowy areas and highlight the contours, whilst being buildable without the opaque fillers.
The packaging is luxurious and I love the pump. The product itself is lovely. With combination-oily skin, I have to be very careful with the word "radiance" as my face can look like I have been kickboxing within an hour. However, this gave my skin a very slight glow and my face never looked greasy. The coverage was medium but not able to completely cover my lovely red spots. It is definitely buildable without looking or feeling heavy.  Finally, the colour range is great and it's about time. This is where YSL has faltered in the past. This time around, there are choices of cool (BR), neutral(B) and warm tones(BD).
While, I like this foundation, I don't love it and I wanted to love it. Trust me (please see aforementioned use of trollop).  I can't put my finger on it, perhaps it's the price? Or the underwhelming effect on my skin? Either way, I felt meh about it.

The down and dirty:
  • price: $60cdn
  • coverage: medium buildable
  • finish: slightly dewy
  • colours: 17 - from the fairest B10 to the darkest B90

A/W 2012 Trend: Fresh and Healthy

You have your graphic liners, cobalt blue lashes and your oxblood red lips, but it is the healthy look  that is the freshest, yet possibly the most difficult to obtain.  As seen as Michael Kors, the wind burnt cheek literally looks like you have been outside playing in the snow.  Hats off to Shiseido's Dick Page for this gorgeous natural look.

Michael Kors
Source: Allure.com

To obtain this type of look, you need to start with a great base and really concentrate on the skin itself. Make sure it is well moisturized and perfected with primer and foundation. It needs to be flawless. At Michael Kors, Dick Page accounts the new Rouge Lacquer (gorgeous) in Drama for those rosy red cheeks. The Rouge Lacquer was placed on the apples of the cheeks, in a chevron pattern, and then blended with a damp sponge. Only top lashes are coated with mascara and then the stained (non glossy) red lip.

Here are some other recommended products:
  • Benefit Benetint
  • Shiseido Rouge Lacquer in Drama
  • Stila Convertible Colour lip and cheek in Gerbera, Rose, Poppy
  • MAC blush in Scarlett
  • Lancome Blush Subtil in Cedar Rose
  • Make Up Forever Aqua Cream in #8

This winter, have fun and get outside, then you can have rosy cheeks for free!
Cheers
